Locative construals: topology, posture, disposition, and perspective in Secoya and beyond.Hunter L. Brown & Rosa Vallejos - 2021 - Cognitive Linguistics 32 (2):251-286.
This study has two aims. First, it lays out the synchronic patterning of four constructions that express static location in Secoya (Tukanoan). Each construction licenses different semantic verb types: topological verbs, postural verbs, an existential verb, and a copula. Second, this study explores the different construals encoded by these constructions and highlights the ways speakers use them creatively to elaborate on stage-level properties adjacent to location in locative utterances. Data collected from six speakers using visual stimuli reveal that each of (...)

More Than Kings and Less Than Men: Tocqueville on the Promise and Perils of Democratic Individualism.L. Joseph Hebert - 2010 - Lexington Books.
This book explains why Tocqueville saw the central task of modern statesmanship as combating 'individualism,' a type of civic apathy that he thought capable of robbing modern citizens of human virtue and issuing in a historically unprecedented form of despotism. It looks in depth at the mechanisms he proposed for avoiding the perils and securing the promise of democracy in his own day, and discusses how Tocqueville's insights might be applied in our own time.

From the Imaginary to Theory of the Gaze in Lacan.Carmelo Licitra Rosa, Carla Antonucci, Alberto Siracusano & Diego Centonze - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
To understand Lacan’s thinking process on vision, the entirety of his teaching must be taken into consideration. Until the 60s, the visual field is the imaginary, the constitutive principle of reality in its phenomenal giving to the experience of a subject. This register is the opposite of the field of the word with the L schema and, subsequently, as subordinated to the symbolic system according to the model of the optical schema of the inverted flower vase of Bouasse. It is (...)

Joseph Margolis’ Pragmatism between Narrative and Prophecy.Rosa M. Calcaterra - 2012 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 4 (2).
It is common knowledge that pragmatism acquired a new and quite relevant space within European philosophical debate during the second half of Nineteen Century, and the leading actors of such a renewed interest for the classics of American thought have been Karl Otto Apel and Jürgen Habermas. Especially in Italy, the so called revival of pragmatism took place via their neo-kantianianism, and actually one could say that the pragmatist thought has been, so to speak, cleared from previous discred...

    Sincere and Insincere Arguing.Davide Dalla Rosa & Filippo Mancini - 2024 - Informal Logic 44 (2):158-184.
In this paper, we contend that there are two ways of arguing, namely sincere and insincere arguing. We draw such a distinction, based on the felicity conditions of the complex speech act of arguing as modelled in van Eemeren and Grootendorst’s pragma-dialectical approach. We introduce a conversa-tional setting, which contains a speech act of arguing that does not count as in-sincere arguing, while being a sui gene-ris form of sincere arguing. We desig-nate it as “cooperative inquiry”. Finally, we show that (...)

Pragmatismo. Dalle origini agli sviluppi contemporanei.Rosa Maria Calcaterra, Giancarlo Marchetti & Giovanni Maddalena (eds.) - 2015 - Roma: Carocci.

Not “Dressed Like a Philosopher”: Tactful Statesmanship in Utopia and the Epigrams.L. Joseph Hebert Jr - 2021 - Moreana 58 (1):31-52.
This paper argues that the mode of statesmanship recommended in Utopia provides the framework for the Epigrams. While Utopia demonstrates the need for artful indirection by exposing the vices of a man too proud to adopt it, the Epigrams exhibit More's preparation for and practice of a tactfully philosophic statesmanship.

Can the use of psychedelic drugs induce lasting changes in metaphysical beliefs? While it is popularly believed that they can, this question has never been formally tested. Here we exploited a large sample derived from prospective online surveying to determine whether and how beliefs concerning the nature of reality, consciousness, and free‑will, change after psychedelic use. Results revealed significant shifts away from ‘physicalist’ or ‘materialist’ views, and towards panpsychism and fatalism, post use. With the exception of fatalism, these changes endured (...)

Transfection of nm23 cDNA has been reported to suppress malignant progression in Drosophila and mammalian cells. Highly conserved homologues of nm23 have been found in organisms ranging from the prokaryote Myxococcus xanthus to Drosophila, where the gene is involved in normal development and differentiation.
